Evacuation Zone vs Flood Zone

Evacuation Zones and Flood Zones are two different designations for two different purposes. Callers may not understand the difference and might ask for their flood zone when they truly need their evacuation zone. A very basic explanation:

  • Evacuation Zones are the areas that officials may order to be evacuated for a storm. Evacuation Zones in Hillsborough County are identified from A to E, and there are parts of the county that are not in an evacuation zone.

  • Flood Zones have nothing to do with storms. They are related to property insurance and building requirements. Nationally, these zones are classified as Zones A through D, V and X. Every property is in a flood zone.

(If needed, use the web page to properly guide callers and give them the correct zone for their needs.)

For full information on the difference between the two designations, I encourage you to go online to HCFLGov.net/StaySafe. Then click on “Storm Safety Information” then choose the tab that says “Evacuation Zones vs Flood Zones”. It explains everything in detail.
